Album Notes

This collection of songs came about a bit unexpectedly when in November 2016 I bought several music making programs including guitar emulators, sample loop collections and software that can take something that was played by a human and then remould it to fit different keys, tempos, and styles. As I started to learn how to use the programs these songs evolved over several months, so I decided to create an album to partly illustrate what was possible with this software. In many ways, these programs are like having virtual band members. I can ask them to play something in a certain style and a few seconds later I have an idea to try out. So, whilst it may at first feel a bit like it’s taking over, it is in fact just like working with real people. Obviously real musicians may well come up with things that computers can’t, but then the same could be said the other way around. Anyway, I do hope you not only find it interesting to hear my virtual musicians at work but also feel some of the emotions and beauty in their playing. Of course, I did have a part to play too, I chose the chords, the tempo, what got to be recorded, edited some of the ideas further, wrote the lyrics and did a bit of singing. Rather than spend months mixing and mastering this album I decided to publish it quite quickly, so there may be some anomalies here and there, especially if you listen very closely. I write a lot of songs and many never see the light of day because it normally takes years to produce an album so a lot get left by the wayside in the process. Fluid Air, my next album has been on the production line for 4 years!
